The song was written by New Zealand singer-songwriter and musician Neil Finn and produced by Mitchell Froom. It was released by Capitol Records on September 22, 1986 as the fourth single from the album. It became the band's most successful song internationally and reached second position on the Billboard Hot 100 list, only below "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)" by Aretha Franklin and George Michael.
